Getting Serious About Ministry, the Word, and the Call - Day 3: Hearing God Through Fasting and Prayer

Day 3: Hearing God Through Fasting and Prayer
Reading: Acts 13:2-3; Matthew 6:16-18; James 1:22-25

Devotional:
Before the Holy Spirit spoke His direction over Barnabas and Saul, the believers at Antioch were fasting and ministering to the Lord. Fasting is not a hunger strike aimed at moving God's hand. It is the deliberate setting aside of something good in order to focus more completely on God. It is a posture of seriousness, a declaration that seeking His will matters more than personal comfort. The Holy Spirit's word -- "Separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them" -- came to a community that was already listening. James 1:22-25 warns that hearing without doing is self-deception. The Antioch church heard and then acted. They prayed, fasted, laid hands on these men, and sent them out. Receiving direction from God requires both the posture to hear and the willingness to obey. Many believers hear God's Word regularly but never act on what they receive. True responsiveness closes the distance between hearing and doing.

Reflection:
Is there a direction God has already made clear to you that you have not yet acted upon? What step of obedience is waiting for your response?
