Paul's message in Lystra was not simply a call to feel remorse. It was a call to turn. Repentance is not merely sorrow over sin. It is a change of direction. First Thessalonians 1:9 describes the Thessalonians' conversion with two movements: they turned from idols, and they turned to the living and true God. Both movements are essential. Turning from without turning to leaves a person empty. Turning toward God without honestly turning from what has replaced Him is incomplete. Idols are anything -- money, reputation, success, pleasure, or self -- that occupies the place in your heart that belongs to God alone. What do you need to turn from today, and what are you turning toward?
